the NEW 2019-20 erin condren life planner!

this is my sixth erin condren life planner!  i am so happy to be in the neutral vertical again.  it has worked out so well for me in the past year, and i can’t even think about using the hourly anymore.  things change and so does my planning style!

{check out @tattooedteacherplans on instagram and my youtube channel for more updates, hauls, & plan with me videos!}

so this year, i went with the same format i used last year: a neutral vertical with a black coil.  this past year, my black coil chipped, which is strange because i have never had problems with them before.  but i’m hoping that this time is different.  i like the black coil because it looks good with every spread.  i was kind of on the fence about whether to go with neutral or colorful.  i actually like a little color in my planner, but ultimately i went with my gut and the neutral.  it is beautiful.

so this review is very long, but oh so thorough!   i’m a loyal customer to EC, but i’m also honest in all my reviews.  i’ve included a video where i walk-through my new planners and accessories, and i give my thoughts but also some detailed notes below.  if there are any notable changes, i have put “NEW” next to the topic.

past year’s reviews if you’re curious! – 2015  |   2015-16  |  2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19

 ••• the good •••

paper quality – the paper is the same as the past few years.  it’s very thick, maybe too think for me.  it also has a texture to it, and i wish it was a little smoother.  however, it is very good quality paper.  and it smells SO GOOD.

size options – it measures about 9 1/4″ (high) x 8 1/4″ (wide), which is perfect.  not too big, not too small.  there are also now two other options: small and large.  but these are only available as hardbound and in only the vertical and horizontal formats.  this year is also a first for a binder planner, but since i won’t be using it, i don’t really have an opinion on it except that the ring placement is super weird.

length options – you can choose an 18 month or 12 month.  you can also choose between july 2017-june 2018 OR january-december 2018 for the 12 month format.

NEW color schemes – for the past few years, the planners have come in colorful and neutral.  for the first time, the neutral has a different colorway.  it alternates four different muted colors along with shades of grays.  the tabs for the neutral are now a charcoal gray versus black, while the colorful still has tabs that match the monthly colors.

removable laminated cover – it’s sturdy and thick.  it’s not going anywhere.  if there are any issues with it, the EC company will replace it or give you credits.  there’s also a luxe option, but it’s permanent and i like the option to change.

cover customization – you can pick your cover and colors, classic or metallic.  they are also removable so you could order another cover (for around $8-13 plus shipping) and put it on your planner whenever you feel the need.  the new covers have a wet erase writing area inside the front and back covers.

heavy spiral coil – it’s super duty, heavy, and will not bend.  they come in platinum, gold, rose gold, and black.  there is an extra charge for any coil that is not platinum.  it looks like the coil for the 18 month is a little bigger, but i’m not sure.

NEW theme – this year’s theme is kaleidoscope!  there’s always a lot of debate about the them, but i actually like the new pattern.  it’s modern and cool.  you can also choose between colorful or neutral.  both are beautiful this year, but i’m going with the neutral.

layout options – this is a personal preference thing.  the options are: vertical, horizontal, or hourly.  the hourly has a reformat with the half hours no longer available.

vellum overlay – every planner comes with a pretty vellum overlay at the front.  it matches your theme, colorful or neutral, in the new kaleidoscope pattern.

NEW ruler – the ruler is now frosted and a little bigger!  it’s a different kind of plastic too so i’m hoping that the teeth don’t break off as much.  it doubles as a page marker and is the perfect tool to cut washi tape.  the design is very subtle.

laminated tabs – they are durable and are not going anywhere.  with the thicker paper, they’re even more sturdy.  as mentioned before, if you get the colorful, you will get colored tabs.  if you get the neutral, the tabs are charcoal gray.

goal page – the goal page has big boxes for you to do whatever you want with.  i haven’t decided what i’m going to use them for but i’ll come up with something!  it has a little more color this year!

NEW 2 page monthly view – it’s enough room to see everything clearly.  i like the monthly goal and to do list on the right too.  the mini calendar in the corner is gone!  there’s also a little line of color below the days of the weeks.  i think it will be helpful when laying down monthly kits.

NEW monthly notes pages and quote – the monthly notes section is different!  there is still a lined page, but now there is a dot grid page and a little dashboard!  it’s organized with a few boxes to list birthdays, goals, and anything else you want to add.  i love this change!  the quote page is across from the notes page and right before the monthly view.

NEW 2 page weekly view – it’s very simple and clean.  the fonts (in the neutral) are the same as last year and are gorgeous!  there’s a new monthly calendar in the corner, which i don’t think is necessary.    you can also choose between the horizontal, vertical, or hourly formats.  since i am an hourly neutral girl, i can only give my opinion on my preferred format.  i really like the changes to the layout!

notes section – who doesn’t need a few notes pages?  there are some lined and some blank pages along with some dot grid paper.  there are also two coloring pages if you’re into that.  i kind of wish there were a few more dot grid pages, but that’s okay.

NEW hexagon notes page – the possibilities are really endless with this page!

keep in touch section – there’s one page at the back of the notes section for contacts. i will probably use it for passwords or quickly jotting down a contact.

NEW stickers – they completely redesigned the stickers in the back.  some are foiled and scripted or pictures.  the foiled functional stickers are very versatile and pretty.  AND they match the monthly colors, which is cool.  however, in the neutral, it only has the four colors that are in the planner.  i will miss the colorful stickers.

NEW pocket and no zipper pouch! –  the pocket is reinforced to deal with wear and tear better.  this year, both sides are a big pocket!  love this change!  the pocket design corresponds to whether you choose colorful or neutral.

NEW keepsake box – the planner doesn’t come with a pouch anymore (i don’t care because i don’t use them anymore), but it does come with a pretty keepsake box!  it doesn’t seem to be the best quality, but it is intended to sit on a shelf so it probably doesn’t have to be.  it also has a sticker to put the year or whatever else you want on the spine of the box.

NEW accessories – new this year are the snap-in sticky notes in new patterns, different colors of wet erase markers, clip in bookmarks in new patterns, another designer sticker book, and new dashboards.

••• the not-so-good •••

there’s really not that many this year!  and i fully admit that these are nit picky.

limited color scheme in neutral – in the past, the neutral colors have been muted versions of the colorful.  now, it is a completely different color scheme.  i think i will get bored of it, but i also cover up a lot of it so it may not matter.

monthly tabs – i wish they opened to the monthly spread instead of the notes pages. it would just be more convenient.

monthly calendar on the weekly pages – this just isn’t necessary.  it takes up valuable sidebar space.  but i can definitely cover it up.

big month/year on the weekly layout – it could have been a little more subtle.  a full box will cover it up though!

rounded corners on weekly layout – i don’t really like the shape of them, but those are easily covered up with sticker headers.
